Abel Knochel joined the department in the fall of 2014. Abel earned hir PhD in Social Work at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities and hir MSW at Spalding University with a focus on gerontology. Abel spent three years as an Assistant Professor in the Augsburg College Social Work Department and has taught courses in several other Twin Cities-based Social Work departments. Abel has taught community practice, policy, research, field and diversity courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. At UMD, Abel is teaching policy, practice and diversity courses.
Abel’s research has focused on issues of sexual orientation and gender identity in aging, including the experience with LGBT older adults of providers of aging services and the preparation of midlife transgender people for the challenges of aging. Abel spent a year engaged in community-based participatory research and hopes to construct a CBPR project focused on the question, “What do transgender people need in order to age well?”
When Abel isn’t working, ze can be found with hir partner and kids, paddleboarding or swimming at a Minnesota lake, or at a justice rally
