Student spotlight: Abbie Rivard

Meet Abbie Rivard, a graduate student in the Department of Social Work.

Why did you choose UMD?

I chose UMD because of its location next to Lake Superior. It is only a short drive from many beautiful and scenic hikes near the shore. I also chose UMD because I was interested in going into some field of human services and when I looked into the field of social work, I became aware that the program and department had a strong emphasis on American Indian communities, which is something I have become very passionate about. It felt like a perfect balance to suit my personal life and future career goals.

What do you like most about your programs?

I love how close-knit my program is and how available, open-minded, and passionate my professors are. I have made many friends and continue to make connections outside of the program.

What has been your most meaningful experience at UMD so far?

During my senior year, I interned at St. Louis County Public Health and Human Services’ On-going Child Protection Indian Child Welfare Unit. Through this experience I was able to conceptualize what a future career in this field would realistically look like, I was able to utilize my knowledge, gained valuable experience, and learned about myself as a future social worker.

What advice do you have for incoming students?

Branch out—attend events you normally wouldn’t, talk to people you might not normally interact with, push yourself out of your comfort zone, make positive changes in your daily routine, take diverse classes, say yes to new adventures, and learn about others beyond a surface level interaction.

What do you like to do in your free time?

In my free time I enjoy hiking, kayaking, looking for sea glass, exploring local restaurants and coffee shops, knitting, and spending quality time with friends and family. I also look forward to traveling whenever possible!
