Student spotlight: Angela Crelly

Meet Angela Crelly, a student in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders.

Angela is a senior who is majoring in Communication Sciences and Disorders and minoring in Psychology and Early Childhood Studies.

What do you like most about your major/minor program(s)?

I love how my program is set up to make meaningful connections with your professors and peers. The professors truly care about you and will help you in any way that they can.

Why did you choose UMD?

I choose UMD because I love the city of Duluth. Duluth provides not only city life but also so many opportunities to get outside and explore the outdoors.

What has been your most meaningful experience at UMD so far?

My most meaningful experience at UMD has been becoming a small group leader in Chi Alpha Duluth ministries. I have been able to get to know many amazing people, and the small groups give upperclassmen opportunities to connect with freshman and sophomores on a meaningful level and build connections and friendships.

Can you tell us a little bit about your research experiences (Fall UROP project)?

I did a UROP project on voice-banking, which is when a person with ALS records their voice in a software program so later in life when they lose their voice, they can have a computer voice that sounds like them! My project's focus was on creating material so individuals going through this diagnosis can decide for themselves what voice-banking software company they wanted to go with and a step-by-step manual on how to go about the process of recording. It was a very rewarding project because I knew the work I was doing would help many people afterward!

What advice do you have for incoming students?

Get connected and find a group on campus that you can call home. College is so much easier when you have great friends to support you.

What do you like to do in your free time?

In my free time, I love to get outside. I enjoy going on walks/hikes and taking in the beautiful nature Duluth has!
