Faculty spotlight: Annette Romualdo

Meet Assistant Professor Annette Romualdo, a new faculty member in the Department of Education.

When did you start at UMD?

I started at UMD in August of 2020 as an assistant professor in the Department of Education. I teach in the Integrated Elementary and Special Education (IESE) and Secondary Teacher Preparation Program (STEP) programs, where I teach inclusive education for students with disabilities to preservice teacher candidates.

What do you like most about your job?

The teacher candidates within our education programs are going into classrooms ready to positively transform our school systems. They are empathetic, understanding, energized, and committed to inclusive learning spaces. To witness their growth into school leaders and system-changers is such a privilege. They really do make my day, every day.

Why did you choose to work at UMD?

The Department of Education at UMD is committed to learning and growing together. We are committed to creating inclusive, responsive, and anti-racist learning spaces. These are our non-negotiables, and my colleagues are amazing because of it. Duluth is such a great place to raise my children and to give space for them to grow into the movers and shakers they are.

What advice do you have for students?

I learn so much from my studentsI feel this is the best part of being in education. Kids have a natural curiosity and creativity that many of us lose as we move into adulthood. My advice: ENJOY and relish in the privilege of working with children. It truly is the most enjoyable and purest profession. Your students will make you laugh every daytheir jokes are the funniest and their love for caring teachers is boundless.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I have always been an outdoor enthusiast. I grew up camping, hiking, gardening, and loving nature. My kiddos and I love to spend our days outside at Hartley, Hawk Ridge, and in the local and state parks. I also love jogging, reading, gathering lots of books, and eating a yummy meal with friends and family. I am involved in local organizations committed to the inclusion of persons with disabilities, including the Down Syndrome Association of Minnesota (DSAMN).
