Student spotlight: Autumn Finch

Meet Autumn Finch, a senior in the Integrated Elementary and Special Education program (IESE).

Why did you choose UMD?

I love Duluth and had a great experience as a PSEO student here. Many of my classes were small and professors were accessible and helpful!

What do you like most about your programs?

My time in classrooms, fabulous professors and instructors, and the cohort model of IESE have been my favorite parts! Spending time in classrooms early on in my program helped me feel confident going into my student teaching. It’s been wonderful to have most of my classes with a small cohort, so I could get to know them well and feel comfortable speaking up in classes or asking for help.

What has been your most meaningful experience at UMD so far?

My student teaching has been so amazingit’s a great opportunity to be a part of a school community and hold the schedule of a teacher while being supported by a mentor and everyone at UMD. Building relationships with students and their families has made me feel confident going into my career and I’m so grateful I got to have a whole year of this experience!

What advice do you have for incoming students?

I would encourage people to take some “fun” classes outside their major! I took climbing and German classes and had so much fun in both. College is the perfect time to learn more about something you’re curious about! It’s a nice way to meet new people and mix up the homework you have, too.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I’m working on a UROP project with a professor, and I love to read. I also like to run, ski, and cook!
