Why did you choose UMD?
For me, I felt like UMD was very diligent in catering to the variety of students it attends. When I toured UMD, I visited the American Indian Learning Resource Center and I found that UMD had a lot of great resources for its Native American students. When I applied to UMD I was able to receive the Minnesota Indian Teaching and Program scholarship. Through my scholarships, the variety of faculty, and the multiple resources offered to Indigenous students I realized UMD was the best and most supportive institute for my education.
What do you like most about your program or area of study?
I like the classes and the faculty the most within my program. All my professors are very dedicated to their students and love to build relations with the student body. My program is pretty large, but I always feel like my professors care about individual students and are always willing to help students further their learning. Professors are very understanding here at UMD and they truly want to build relationships with students and see them flourish.
What has been your most meaningful experience at UMD so far?
The most meaningful experience for me so far at UMD has been joining the Indigenous Student Organization within the Multicultural center on campus. The Indigenous Student Organization holds events on campus that focus on education and student involvement within Native American culture, history, and community. When I joined the Indigenous Student Organization I wanted to be more involved on campus, but I had no idea the large sense of community it would bring me. I have been able to make friends and engage myself within the UMD community and the greater Duluth community.
What advice do you have for incoming students?
My advice for incoming students would be to get involved and find your community. Finding activities and places on campus where you feel a sense of place is important. The campus is your home and having groups of friends that make you feel at home is key to enjoying your college experience.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I love to get outside since being here in Duluth. I love hiking up trails along the north shore or exploring other remarkable landmarks near Lake Superior. Being out in nature and feeling connected to the Earth brings me peace, and it helps me refocus on my studies and work when I am indoors.
