Meet Jackie Heytens, Executive Office & Administrative Specialist in the Department of Social Work.
When did you start working at UMD?
October of 2007
Why did you choose to work at UMD?
Having lived in Superior for most of my life, I love the Twin Ports and the Northland. I am also an alumna of UMD and love the UMD community. I am happy working with people of all ages and from all backgrounds, including students, faculty, staff, and community members. Social Work is such an important profession, and I feel like it is needed now more than ever.
What do you like most about your job?
I like the variety of work in my job. I am responsible for a wide range of duties and tasks, and no two days are the same! Our department has gone through a lot of growth and change during my time at UMD, and I feel like I have made a difference in the department.
What advice do you have for students?
Work hard but have fun! There is a lot to offer at UMD so get involved in what you are passionate about and what makes you happy. There is also a lot to offer in this area, so explore! Take advantage of the many resources offered at UMD. Keeping organized makes me a much happier person, along with making time for myself and trying to learn from my mistakes.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I like to do just about anything outdoors, including hiking, kayaking, gardening, and spending time at our cabin. We created a disc golf course at our cabin during the pandemic, and I am trying to master that. I have a long way to go, but it is fun! I enjoy playing volleyball and have played in various leagues for over 30 years. I am also a big UMD Volleyball fan. Go Bulldogs! I love to travel and to find unique places to visit in the U.S., and I enjoy spending time with family, including my 13-year-old beagle named Bailey.
