Student spotlight: Jessica Mantor

Meet Jessica Mantor, a graduate student in the Department of Social Work.

Jessica previously received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from UMD and she’s currently a student in the Master of Social Work program.

Why did you choose UMD?

I chose UMD because that is where I started decades ago, so it was familiar and I love the campus. The MSW Program has been around a long time and has adapted to the changing field of social work. I appreciate when a program can evolve and graduate students with the most current knowledge in their chosen field.

What do you like most about your programs?

The MSW program has an array of professors/instructors that have real-life experience in the field, which is so important. Theory is the foundation, but social workers' ability to connect with families and the community goes way beyond ‘the books.’ As a child-welfare scholar, it is crucial that I am provided with tangible information and a transparent glimpse into the field.

What has been your most meaningful experience at UMD so far?

I have made some very meaningful connections with other MSW students while I have been in the program. This is essential in that self-care in the field of child protection and social work, in general, is built on safe places to land. This profession is not one that you can freely discuss with family and friends, due to confidentiality, but also a realistic understanding of what we actually do. It is also extremely beneficial for the families that I work with when I have connections and a broader scope to available community resources.

What advice do you have for incoming students?

Completing your degree is not a race … take your time and get the most out of it that you can. It has taken me five years to complete the MSW program and there is no shame in that. This is especially true for non-traditional students that may have children and work a full-time job outside of school. Balance is key. We cannot be our best selves if we can’t be in the moment. Also, have fun and laugh a lot! There is great medicine in laughter.

What do you like to do in your free time?

In my free time, I love to spend time with my human family, as well as our four-legged companions. I also love rock collecting and most things that involve being in the presence of nature. Duluth is such a beautiful place and we have all kinds of nooks and crannies to explore.
