Faculty spotlight: Katie Kask

Katie Kask, assistant professor in the exercise and rehabilitation sciences program, enjoys the fresh ideas and perspectives at UMD

When did you start at UMD? Why did you choose to work at UMD?

I started as an adjunct at UMD the spring semester of 2024 and I am now full time. I chose UMD for multiple reasons. I am drawn to the academic environment that UMD offers. Hope is fostered in a setting where people are encouraged to explore new ideas and new perspectives. I enjoy being a part of that.

What do you like most about your job?

I like when students make meaningful personal connections between what they are learning in class and how it applies to their own lives or the lives of those they will work with in the future.

What is your teaching focus?

My teaching focus emphasizes evidence-based practice. My background is in rehabilitation. I have worked as a physical therapist for over a decade and in my practice, I focus on the application of research in my treatment plans. In the classroom, I discuss research and how it applies to work in the field. I enjoy bringing my experiences as a clinician to the classroom where students can discover the impact of science in helping professions.

Do you have any advice for students?

Remain curious. Be open to what you might not fully understand.

What do you like to do in your free time?

Much of my free time is spent with my husband and two young children. We are outside as much as possible, either exploring the woods around our home or playing in the water at the grandparent's cabin. I also enjoy trail running and curling up on the couch for some guilty-pleasure TV time at the end of the day.
