What is your title/role?
I am the lead teacher for Preschool at the Park located in the Chester Park building on campus. I teach children about the wonderful things that nature has provided for us that help us grow physically, socially, emotionally, and cognitively; how to take care of mother nature and the beings that share our nature playscapes at our campus; and all the life cycles we encounter living in the Northland.
Why did you choose to work at UMD?
I originally came from a small community and Duluth scared me, but with the help of my fellow co-workers who went to UMD for college and eventually all took a job teaching at UMD Children’s Place, they had talked about UMD being like “a home and a great atmosphere” for them. So when they all chose to come back to work for UMD I decided I wanted to apply for a teaching job that gave that sense of family and home. Previously we had all taught together at another location and worked very well as a team. They inspired me to join the UMD Child Care Team and I am so glad I went out of my comfort zone to join such a great place and community. I get to teach children from so many different family backgrounds and form so many great relationships with my students, their families, and UMD students and faculty. Pair this with all the outdoor space that UMD offers and it is a dream.
What do you like most about your job?
I love being able to explore so many areas around campus with the children and teach them about themselves, how to play and explore areas safely; what you can and can’t eat while outdoors; and how to be kind to themselves, our earth, and all the beings around them.
Do you have any advice for students?
My advice to other students is to go into a field that you love. It’s not all about the pay scale because sometimes it means more to yourself if you are doing something that has meaning to you and that you enjoy and love. Feel free and be OK to step out of your comfort zone and explore new things.
What do you like to do in your free time?
In my “free time” I love to read, farm, and explore new places with my family.
