Student spotlight: Vladmir Raiter Paes

Meet Vladmir, a Master of Environmental Education student from Sao Paulo, Brazil

Why did you choose UMD?

Among my options, UMD stood out as my top choice due to its welcoming environment, generosity, and proximity to beautiful natural areas that are certainly enriching the MEEd experience. I’ve never seen this level of infrastructure at any university of a similar size.

What do you like most about your program?

The student-faculty ratio and the proximity to so many natural areas. I wanted to have the best experience I could possibly have, and when it comes to environmental education, it’s hard to imagine a better place to be. On top of that, I love the many possibilities my program offers. Thanks to the connections it provides, I’m working directly with the Office of Sustainability and the Department of Biology, and the support they offer is invaluable.

What has been your most meaningful experience at UMD so far?

The Boundary Waters trip I did as a TA for an undergraduate class last fall. I assisted the instructor of that course with organizing the field trip, and it was a great experience to camp alongside undergraduate students specializing in environmental and outdoor education. I’d compare it to taking chemistry students on an intense weekend lab session—it was a fully immersive experience. The students still remember the dinner and the breakfast I prepared for them!

If I had to mention an ongoing experience, though, it would be my research, which involves designing hands-on educational experiences in a farming environment. I’m utilizing the Land Lab and incorporating an ongoing biochar research project (led by Professor Julie Etterson) into my work. It’s amazing to see so many people from different backgrounds and departments collaborating to help me receive the best possible education. As a graduate student, I definitely feel supported and valued.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I like curling, playing soccer, and traveling as much as I can. Hunting for covered bridges is one of my travel hobbies, and few things are more relaxing than reading a book by a creek or a lake. When at home, cooking is my favorite relaxing activity.
