This must be done at least 4 weeks prior to registration period for the semester in which you want to do the internship. Please be advised that many internships are competitive. You should plan your internship at least 1 full semester in advance of the time you which to start it.
This course is for the purpose of providing a supervised field internship experience in a hospital, corporation, or private fitness facility. This course is required for the exercise science majors in the health fitness concentration.
This class is offered for variable credit from 3 to 12 semester credits. The normal internship for the Health Fitness concentration is 6 credits. The student is required to complete the internship within the semester or summer session he/she enrolls. This course is for undergraduate credit only. Before a student can enroll in this course they must be an exercise science candidate, have a minimum of overall GPA of 2.5, and have successfully completed ESAT 3400, Exercise Physiology and ESAT 3420, Exercise Testing & Prescription. Grading for this class is S (satisfactory) or N (not satisfactory) only. You cannot register for nor participate in an internship if you are on Departmental Academic Probation.
Before Enrolling in Class
- An affiliation agreement between the University of Minnesota Duluth and the agency must be established before the student can enroll for the internship. Securing an agency site involves contacting the agency, providing them with a copy of the affiliation agreement, and having them agree to the provisions outlined in the affiliation agreement. This process may take up to a semester to complete because both UMD's and the agency's legal council will need to review and approve the agreement. The student is highly recommended to complete the internship at one of the approved agency sites. New sites can be established based on the needs of the student but the student must realize that the process to establish an approved site will take at least one semester.
- The student is required to schedule a meeting with the UMD internship coordinator for the purpose of discussing the length of the internship, number of hours for the internship, the site of the internship, requirements of the internship, and to determine if the student is qualified to be an intern. This meeting must be held at least 4 weeks prior to the student enrolling to the course.
- For every one semester credit enrolled the intern will complete 40 hours of supervised field internship experience. The minimum length of an internship is 120 hours (3 semester hours) of supervised field experience where as the maximum length of an internship is 480 hours (12 semester hours).
- After an initial meeting with Ms. Holmes, the student must contact the approved site to determine if an internship opportunity is available. At the time the student visits with the internship agency supervisor he/she must provide the supervisor with the following materials: supervisor contract, letter of agreement, and internship evaluation form. Student & UMD Exercise Science Internship Coordinator Requirements During The Internship
- The student will begin and complete their internship during the semester or summer session enrolled in the course. The internship starting date can vary within the semester or summer session due to the length of the internship but the internship will be completed on the last scheduled class day of the semester or summer session. The intern is not permitted to begin their internship prior to the beginning of the semester or summer session in which they are enrolled in the course.
- The intern will complete the assigned duties identified by the sponsoring agency and conduct themselves in a professional manner according to the agencies standards.
- The intern will complete an internship weekly log (identified in the letter of agreement) and submit the weekly log to the UMD exercise science internship coordinator via email or in person every Monday during the internship period. If any weekly logs are not completed the intern will earn an unsatisfactory grade for the course and will need to repeat the internship. The UMD exercise science internship coordinator will on a weekly basis read and evaluate the log then provide feedback to the intern via telephone or email.
- Mid-term and final internship evaluations will be completed by the agency internship supervisor. The evaluations are sent to the UMD exercise science internship coordinator. If the mid-term or final evaluation are not completed and received, the intern will earn an unsatisfactory grade for the course and will need to repeat the internship.
- A typed critique of the internship experience as outlined in the letter of agreement will be submitted to the UMD exercise science internship coordinator within one week after the completion of the internship. If the typed critique of the internship experience is not completed the intern will receive an unsatisfactory grade for the course and will need to repeat the internship.
- The exercise science internship coordinator will contact the intern and internship agency supervisor at least twice during the internship. Contact may be conducted with a personal visit, via telephone or through email. The purpose of these contacts are different from the weekly feedback about their logs. These meetings are to assess the interns experience and allow the agency supervisor to provide information about the interns status.
- The intern will schedule an exit internship meeting (can be in person or via telephone) with the UMD exercise science internship coordinator upon completion of the internship to discuss the internship experience.
- Once the above requirements have been satisfied the UMD exercise science internship coordinator will issue a grade of "S" or "N" for the class. If the requirements have not been satisfied by the end of the semester or summer session in which the intern has enrolled in the class, the UMD internship coordinator will issue a grade of "N" for the class.
