In Block 1 of the IESE program, teacher candidates will be in a K-6 general education classroom every Wednesday. They will begin their classroom placements after attending UMD Professional Day.

Each teacher candidate will sign a Field Experience contract for their classroom placement and will be responsible for contacting their cooperating teacher immediately after Professional Day. Teacher candidates will also need to give an honorium packet to their teacher and return it to Tracy Ausmus in the Field Experience office.

Teacher candidates will then have a 5 week full time practicum in that same classroom. IESE faculty will let teacher candidates know about the dates for the semester. Cooperating teachers will evaulate progress in the practicum. IESE faculty will visit candiates at their practicum site.

IESE teacher candidates will complete course work related to their Block 1 courses in the school classroom. IESE faculty will provide information about these assignments.

IESE BLOCK I COURSES

• SPED 4435 Parent/Prof Communication and Collaboration (4 credits)
• SPED 4310 Response to Intervention in the General Education Classroom (4 credits)
• SPED 4381 Classroom and Behavior Management (4 credits)
• IESE 3325 Foundations to Literacy (3 credits)
• IESE 4366 Teaching Elementary Social Studies I (3 credits)
• Practicum (5 weeks)
• Practicum Seminar (Fridays during full time practicum)

Teacher candidates must successfully complete all Block 1 course work and get an acceptable practicum evaluation from their cooperating teacher to move on to Block 2

In Block 2 of the IESE program, teacher candidates will be in a special education classroom every Wednesday and will gain hours for their Academic and Behavioral Strategist licensure. They will begin their classroom placements after attending UMD Professional Day.

• IESE 4347 – Second Language Acquisition and ELL(2 credits)
• IESE 4367 Teaching Elementary Social Studies II (2 credits)
• Practicum (5 weeks)

• EDUC 3381 Teaching the American Indian Student ( 2 credits) 
• Practicum (5 weeks)
• Practicum Seminar

Teacher candidates must successfully complete all Block 3 course work and get an acceptable practicum evaluation from their cooperating teacher to move on to student teaching.

Teacher candidates will apply for student teaching during Block 3 and faculty will review their applications and make decisions concerning their placement.
