Student Teacher Candidates

  • Each program has different student teaching requirements.
  • Student teachers in each program have different placement time frames.
  • All student teachers receive a UMD student teaching handbook and an edTPA handbook
  • All student teachers are required to complete a midterm and a final evaluation.
  • All student teachers are required to complete and upload their edTPA through Tk20 to Pearson.

Student Teaching Applications

Students needing to complete their Field Experience requirement(s) must submit an application in Tk20. Applications need to be completed the semester prior to student teaching. After completing the application, you will need to meet with your faculty advisor to review your Program Clearance Packet and your readiness for student teaching.

*Applications open the first day of the semester and are due at 4 p.m. on the 4th Friday.

Log in to Tk20

You will use your UMD username and password to login to Tk20.  The application you need to complete will depend on the program in which you are enrolled:

IESE Student Teaching

  • If this is your first student teaching experience (typically Block 4), then you will complete the "Initial Student Teaching Application [term]" in Tk20.
  • If this is your second student teaching experience (typically Block 5), then you will need to complete the "IESE/UECH Block 5 Student Teaching Application [term]" in Tk20.

STEP Student Teaching

  • Complete the "Initial Student Teaching Application [term]" in Tk20.

UECH Student Teaching

  • If this is your first student teaching experience (typically Block 4), then you will need to complete the "Initial Student Teaching Application [term]" in Tk20.
  • If this is your second student teaching experience (typically Block 5), then you will need to complete the "IESE/UECH Block 5 Student Teaching Application [term]" in Tk20.

Post Bac Student Teaching (ECSE, SPED ABS, Secondary Science 9-12)

  • Complete the "Initial Student Teaching Application [term]" in Tk20.

"Initial Student Teaching Application [term]" Application Components:  STEP Block 2 students, IESE Block 3 students, UECH Block 3 students

  • Demographic Information
  • Placement request preferences (Block 3, 4, and/or 5 depending on your program)
  • Educational Background: Where you went to school (you cannot be placed at these schools)
  • Zone Preference (location of student teaching placement)
    • Zone 1 (Within 40 miles, e.g., Duluth, Superior, Proctor, Hermantown, Albrook, Cloquet, Carlton-Esko, Two Harbors, Wrenshall, Barnum, Moose Lake)
    • Zone 2 (Iron Range, North Shore, and northern Wisconsin)
    • Zone 3 (Interstate 35 Corridor - Willow River, Sandstone, Hinckley)
    • Zone 4 (Minneapolis, St. Paul, 694 Corridor)
  • Transportation available during student teaching
  • Program Clearance Packet: Student will upload the packet into Tk20 including cover sheet documenting remaining degree requirements, if the student is on a Professional Development Plan or is identified as a Student of Concern, Teacher License Testing information and Syllabi required to be submitted and APAS Report or Post Bac Contract.
    • NOTE: Program Clearance Packets will be emailed to both the student and the advisor and uploaded by the student into Tk20. If you don't receive a Program Clearance Packet you don't have any advisees applying for student teaching. Program Clearance Packets will be emailed the Monday following Professional Day.
  • Resume (Label the file: Your last name. First initial. Resume):  Upload Resume into Tk20.  This resume will be shared with cooperating teachers, it is STRONGLY recommended to work with Career and Internship Services to make sure it is presenting your best professional self.
  • Essay (Label the file: Your last name. First initial. Essay):  Upload an essay into Tk20 that will be shared with your potential cooperating teacher to help them determine whether you are a good fit with their philosophies and values. Your essay should be an introduction of yourself as a teacher to your potential cooperating teacher. The essay should identify and share your current understanding of what meaningful learning is for students in your content area, and explain how you would likely structure classroom opportunities and environments to contribute to meaningful learning for your students. The essay should include examples of methods and structures you hope to see in place in your classrooms, and examples of topics and concepts in your subject area that excite or inspire you. As you write, think about what you have learned about teaching and learning and about yourself as a future teacher in the course of our programs.Make sure your essay contains no grammatical or spelling errors. Keep descriptions about yourself and your experiences positive. Maximum length: two pages, word processed and double spaced. Include your name in the upper right-hand corner. Please note that this essay is an essential and vital portion of the application, as you will be working very closely with your cooperating teacher for an extended period of time. Your essay should establish for the reader the person you hope to become as a teacher.
  • Agreement to disclaimers:  Student Teaching Agreement, Exit Criteria, Licensing Agreement, Code of Ethics, Program Clearance Disclaimer, Out of Areas Fees, etc.

"IESE/UECH Block 5 Student Teaching Application [term]" Application Components:  IESE Block 4 students, UECH Block 4 students
