STEP Block 1 Field Experience
Field experiences begin the third Friday of the semester. A minimum of 60 hours in the field experience placement is required. Block 1 teacher candidates create a schedule with their cooperating teacher to meet this minimum requirement.
Teacher candidates schedule approximately 10 hours in their classrooms after UMD Professional Day. There is a four week period during the semester when education classes do not meet so teacher candidates can spend more time in the classroom (approximately 50 hours).
Teacher candidates are expected to complete the following in their Block 1 classroom(s):
- Teach 2 lessons (that fall in the scope and sequence of the classroom curriculum)
- Assist student's learning
- Assist in classroom management
- General classroom tasks (attendance, grading, after school activities, lunchroom, hallway monitor)
- Whatever other tasks the cooperating teacher sees fit to request
- Complete the Observation Tool: Domains A and B
Cooperating teachers complete all required feedback and evaluation forms, and discuss them with the teaching candidates:
- STEP Midpoint Check-in Form
- Rubrics for Domains A and B Forms where required by specific coursework
- Complete the Field Experience Evaluation Form and approve teaching candidate time log in Tk20.
STEP Block 1 field experiences are located in a middle or high school setting. The placements will be made locally, in northern Wisconsin, or on the Iron Range.
