Mission
American Indian Projects develops and oversees initiatives related to American Indians in the Master of Social Work Program including support, advocacy, linkages to the American Indian community, curriculum development, and other projects which support the recruitment and retention of American Indian students.
History
In an effort to support American Indian child welfare initiatives, American Indian Projects was developed and housed in the Social Work Program (known as the School of Social Development) in 1971. Throughout the years, American Indian Projects has changed depending on funding availability and was temporarily suspended due to lack of funding in the early 1990’s. In 1999, the Department of Social Work re-established American Indian Projects to address the growing need for outreach to American Indian communities. The program was revitalized once again in 2025, hiring a full-time American Indian Projects Coordinator to assist with American Indian student support.
