Assistant Professor

Shawyn Domyancich-Lee, PhD, MSW, LGSW is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Social Work. As a historical research methodologist, and critical adoption scholar, Shawyn's research uses a maternalist framework to examine the origins of Korean adoption, thereby disrupting the dominant adoption narrative that suggests adoption serves the best interests of the child, and allowing for the voices and perspectives of adoptees to become a part of adoption discourse. Prior to moving into academia, Shawyn came from  a background in macro practice social work as a community organizer, program developer, and educator and trainer. The nature of Shawyn's community work considered the oppressive nature of larger systemic and historic structures and their effects on marginalized communities. Shawyn brings this experience into the classroom, and uses critical pedagogical teaching methods to help students approach their work through social justice and anti-oppressive practice frameworks.
