Student spotlight: Gavrielle Gunther

Meet Gavrielle Gunther, a junior who is majoring in psychology and minoring in biology.

Why did you choose UMD?

I chose UMD for many reasons! First off Duluth is a beautiful city with endless access to the outdoors and UMD does a wonderful job at making those outdoor activities accessible for students. Another reason I chose UMD was the student body. I clearly remember on my tours how warm and welcoming all of the students were.

What do you like most about your programs?

Psychology is an amazing program. My favorite thing about it is the professors, they are so supportive and insightful in the field of psychology. They have always pushed me to apply my all and to better myself.

What has been your most meaningful experience at UMD so far?

My most meaningful experience at UMD wouldn't be what you expect, I would have to say my freshman year when we had to leave school due to COVID-19. That experience made me realize how important it is to enjoy your time and the people that you meet in college. Having to leave the University and move home was a shocking experience, going from living with my friends to seeing them over zoom call definitely made me appreciate the unique experience college gives you.

What advice do you have for incoming students?

Get involved. Whether that is in clubs, intramural sports, research, outdoor programs, or all of the other opportunities UMD has to offer. College is going to fly by, go to that interesting-looking club, try surfing, there are so many opportunities here and so many different ways to meet forever friends!

What do you like to do in your free time?

In my free time, I like to get outside and explore! Hiking is definitely my favorite thing to do but I also enjoy skiing and kayaking.
