Student spotlight: Alison O'Donnell

Social work student finds resources, support, and community at UMD

Alison O'Donnell came to UMD from Middleton, Wisconsin. She's majoring in social work and minoring in psychology and early childhood studies.

Why did you choose UMD?

I chose UMD because it felt like a small school with big resources, which was really important to me. As a student with learning disabilities, I’ve had to learn how to advocate for myself, and UMD has provided incredible support through disability resources, who have been there for me throughout my time here. Additionally, while touring the campus, I saw the community here and that huge lake, and just knew I had to be a part of it.

What do you like most about your program?

I’m in the Bachelor of Social Work program here, and I really love the flexibility it offers. The hybrid format allows me to balance my internship, work, and home life while still staying engaged with my classes. I also feel incredibly supported by my professors and peers in my cohort. We’ve built our own little community, which makes everything just a bit easier and more meaningful.

What has been your proudest accomplishment or your most meaningful experience at UMD so far?

My proudest moment has to be when I made the Dean’s List for the first time—and every time after that. The first time was especially meaningful because I was honestly shocked. It was something I never thought I could achieve, so seeing all my hard work pay off and being recognized for it meant—and still means—a lot to me.

My most meaningful experience has been serving as president of the Bachelor of Social Work Student Association (BSWSA). It was an opportunity that kind of fell into my lap, but I’ve loved every moment of it. Working alongside my peers to strengthen the community within the BSW program, while also collaborating with other clubs on campus, has been both rewarding and fun. I really enjoy seeing the connections that form and being able to add a little extra happiness to my peers’ days.

I live with some amazing roommates who I’ve been with since freshman year—which I’ve learned isn’t all that common! I just love those girls. We’re always either out exploring Duluth or at home watching whatever reality show is on—right now it’s Dancing with the Stars and The Golden Bachelor. Spending time with them is definitely a big part of my self-care and has really helped me throughout my years here at UMD.
