Letter from the Dean

Scott Carlson in his office

The College of Education and Human Service Professions (CEHSP) strives for student belonging and success by embracing dynamic, innovative approaches to teaching and learning. In this issue of Synergy, we explore our college’s high-impact practices (HIPs) — evidence-based methods that improve student outcomes and foster engagement.

While the literature on HIPs often focuses on undergraduate retention, CEHSP broadens this approach. We believe these practices, from critical thinking to experiential learning, are equally vital for our graduate students, providing the professionally-oriented experiences that lead to practical credentials.

Inside this issue, HIPs are demonstrated through the stories of our students, faculty, alumni, and donors. Learn about a new scholarship that supports future educators during their foundational time of student teaching and a new student club where inclusion is integral to its mission. Read about how inquiry-based education can be used to tackle challenging environmental education topics. We also highlight in these pages how graduate practicums and research projects can help define careers.

These practices translate into real-world results and CEHSP graduates who are prepared to be exemplary leaders in their respective fields.

We hope you enjoy these stories of growth, discovery and the impact of a CEHSP education.

Sincerely,

Scott Carlson, CEHSP interim dean
