Admission Prerequisites
- Completed Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
- GPA of 2.8 or higher
- Preferred applicants will also have two years professional experience or demonstrated experience working with learners.
International Applicants
Please note, if you are a foreign national this degree does not meet the face-to-face requirements for an F-1 Student Visa for international students. However, our Master of Education program can admit foreign national students with the expectation the student will attend all courses online, from your country of residence.
You must also meet the UMD Graduate School's English Language Proficiency Requirements. Please familiarize yourself with the acceptable scores and tests before applying.
Teacher Licensure Not Included

Required Application Materials
All application materials should be submitted into the University of Minnesota Graduate School’s online application system. Your application will not be reviewed until all of the required materials are submitted successfully. Incomplete applications will not be considered for admission. Since this application system is used across the UM campuses by a diversity of graduate programs, the application has sections that may be required by other programs, but not required for the M.Ed. application. Please follow these instructions to ensure you are completing the appropriate sections of the application to qualify for M.Ed. admission.
Official Undergraduate Transcript
You may upload your unofficial transcript(s) to the application. However, before being admitted to the program, an official transcript from your undergraduate university must be sent directly to the graduate school at:

Resume/CV
Resume or CV should include academic and professional experiences. You may also include other relevant experiences such as volunteer work.
Writing Sample
The personal statement is a sample of your writing and a way to inform the program about your experiences and your academic goals. This statement is required.
- The statement should be between 500 and 1000 words double spaced in 12 point font and should include an introduction, body, and conclusion.
- This is an original work written by the applicant and does not require any references to other sources.
- The submission should have no spelling, grammar, or punctuation errors and be professional in writing tone.
Please address the following in your statement:
- Describe your academic background and career history and explain how this led you to pursue graduate study.
- How will the M.Ed. help you achieve a personal and/or professional goal(s)?
- Describe a past or present personal/professional experience that you believe demonstrates your potential for success in a graduate program.
- Describe how you would add diversity to the program, OR describe your experience with diversity and diverse populations.
Two Letters of Recommendation
Two letters of recommendation are required. Letter should attest to your academic or professional performance and your ability to be successful in a graduate program. Once your application is submitted, an email notification will be sent to your recommenders requesting a letter of recommendation be uploaded into the application. Please inform your recommenders when you have submitted your application.

Application Fee
U.S. residents are charged a $75 application fee. The most detailed and up-to-date information about the fee is included in the instructions that accompany the online application for admission. Please note the application fee cannot be waived or deferred and is not refundable.

Admission Decisions
Applications are reviewed by the M.Ed. Director of Graduate Studies and one other M.Ed. faculty member. Admission decisions are communicated by UMN Graduate School Admissions to applicants’ emails through the admissions system. In extenuating circumstances, admitted applicants may request a deferral of their admission to graduate study for up to one year without reapplying. If the deferral is approved and the student does not start within the one year period, the applicant must reapply.
