Gimiwon Nahgahnub, MSW, LGSW (he/him), is a proud descendant of the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Anishinaabe. Gimiwon is a social worker and educator whose teaching and practice are grounded in Indigenous epistemology, lived experience, and a commitment to decolonization. He earned both his BA and MSW from the University of Minnesota Duluth. Gimiwon, inspired by a family commitment to Indigenous advocacy, majored in American Indian Studies with an emphasis in Social Studies, advised by Dr. John Red Horse.
Gimiwon’s research focus is on the historical legacy of American colonization and its persistent, generational impacts on contemporary Indigenous communities. Drawing on lived experience both on and off the reservation, as well as experience practicing as a licensed graduate social worker in private practice and community behavioral health settings, Gimiwon seeks to bring an Indigenous perspective to social-work education and practice. His teaching is grounded in an understanding of social work as both a relational and contextual practice, encouraging students to examine the historical, cultural, and institutional forces that shape the lives of individuals, families, and communities.
