Post Baccalaureate Teaching Licensure Program
The Post Baccalaureate Program is intended for individuals who have already earned a bachelor’s degree and are now interested in completing a teacher preparation program as well as for those who have earned a bachelor’s degree in a teaching major seeking an endorsement or additional licensure area.
Please note: Education Studies graduates will not be eligible for admission into the UMD Post Bachelor’s Teacher License program with an unmet professional development plan.
Special Education: Academic Behavioral Strategist (Grades K-12)
A teacher holding the Academic and Behavioral Strategist (ABS) license is authorized to provide evaluation and specially designed instruction to eligible children and youth with disabilities from kindergarten through age 21 who have a range of mild to moderate needs in the areas of academic, behavior, social/emotional, communication, and functional performance. These students may be eligible for special education services in the primary disability areas of autism spectrum disorders (ASD), developmental cognitive disability (DCD), emotional/behavioral disorders (EBD), other health disorders (OHD), and specific learning disabilities (SLD).
At UMD there are two options to obtain a K-12 Special Education: Academic Behavioral Strategist license.
- Option 1: Complete the Integrated Elementary and Special Education dual licensure undergraduate degree program.
- Option 2: Students who already hold a Bachelor's degree can pursue the K-12 standalone Special Education: Academic Behavioral Strategist License. For more information on this option, please complete the Post Baccalauerate Teacher Licensure Interest Form.
