Staff spotlight: Jeremy Wilson

Wilson has fond memories of visiting his mom at UMD when he was a child

In August 2024, Jeremy Wilson was hired as the assistant director of the American Indian Learning and Resource Center.

Why did you choose to work at UMD?

My passion for higher education, the Duluth community, and efforts supporting the students, both Native and non-Native. My mother is an undergraduate alumnus and a former employee. I remember being a kid and visiting campus with her. It was always pleasant and welcoming at UMD. It seemed so cool to us, and we were proud of our mom for attending and working here.

What do you like most about your job?

The opportunities to continually work collaboratively with colleagues on campus, support and guide our students toward completion, and that each day presents new initiatives and ways to seek out success, however that looks!

Do you have any advice for students?

Allow yourself to “learn while you learn." The academic component comes with the degree pursuit, so that should always be the focal point, but also, there are factors such as time management, financial literacy, how to successfully plan for social times, and self-care. Learning to balance each of those accordingly can make for a well-rounded college experience, so go get involved and make friends while you’re at it!

What do you like to do in your free time?

Spend time with my kids, I have a 6 ½-year-old daughter and some college-aged kids. Whenever we can, we spend time together. I like to go to powwows and other cultural or ceremonial events pertaining to Anishinaabe ways of life. I enjoy riding my bike, playing basketball, and watching movies when I have some downtime.
