Student spotlight: Lily Marchant

Graduate student appreciates the connections she has made with supervisors and peers at UMD.

Lily Marchant is originally from Mahtomedi, Minnesota. She's a first-year graduate student in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders.

Why did you choose UMD?

I chose UMD because of its reputation for its Communication Sciences and Disorders M.A. program. I also had friends who completed their master’s here, and hearing them talk about their experiences both during the program and in their careers afterward made me feel confident that UMD would be the right place for me.

What do you like most about your program?

What I enjoy most about my program is the incredible support from our supervisors and the connections I’ve built with my peers. I also love that I get to work with such a wide variety of clients because it has pushed me to grow and become more confident as a clinician!

What has been your proudest accomplishment or your most meaningful experience at UMD so far?

Some of the most meaningful moments for me have been the small victories I’ve seen with my clients. For example, one of my clients recently had a breakthrough where everything finally clicked for them. Moments like this are so rewarding and a reminder of why I chose this field.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I love spending my free time knitting! It helps me slow down at the end of a busy day. My next project is making a scarf to keep me warm in Duluth!
