Professor Rhea Owens, Ph.D., L.P., a faculty member in UMD's Department of Psychology, was recently recognized for her extensive contributions to the fields of counseling and positive psychology. An expert in applied strengths research, Owens focuses on identifying positive traits to enhance the well-being of children and youth.
Through a competitive selection process, Owens was awarded Fellow status by the American Psychological Association (APA) for Division 17 (Counseling Psychology), effective January 2026. This distinction recognizes members whose work has had a significant impact on the field of psychology at a national level.
For Owens, the achievement is a full-circle moment. “Many years ago, as a first-year graduate student, I attended the Division 17 Fellows ceremony where one of my mentors, Dr. Shane Lopez, received this recognition,” she says. “I recall being deeply inspired by the Fellows at this ceremony. To now be part of this group of tremendous psychologists feels surreal and is an incredible honor.”
In addition to the APA Fellow distinction, Owens was recently elected to the International Positive Psychology Association’s (IPPA) Board of Directors. Her commitment to these principles is evident at UMD through the "Living Your Best Life" course, which she designed in 2020 and has since expanded. The class helps first-year students translate positive psychology concepts through hands-on learning that builds community and success.
“The APA Fellow designation and IPPA board seat solidify Dr. Owens’ position as a key figure in the global psychological community. We're proud to have such faculty excellence within our Department of Psychology," said Scott Carlson, interim dean of CEHSP.
