Faculty spotlight: Karen Marsh

Longtime faculty member enjoys finding new and creative ways to engage psychology students.

Karen Marsh is a clinical psychologist and a teaching assistant professor in the Department of Psychology.

Why did you choose to work at UMD?

My husband and I both grew up in the Chicago area and lived there after we were married, but we vacationed "up north" and loved the access to nature. So, we moved. I worked for a number of human service institutions, teaching both online and in-person classes, and one of those was UMD. I liked the atmosphere here so much that I stayed and have now been here 25 years.

What is your research or teaching focus?

My focus is teaching. I enjoy finding new creative ways of engaging students in academic content and discussion. I also enjoy that students (current and past) reach out to me, which fits exactly with UMD's role as a public university.

What do you like most about your job?

What I like most about my job is the interaction with students of all ages that are finding or pursuing their life journeys. I find them to be incredibly energetic and view them with confidence as people who will someday be in charge.

Do you have any advice for students?

As a clinical psychologist and counselor, I advise students to discover what they love, and they will discover who they are.
