When did you start at UMD? Why did you choose to work at UMD?
I started at UMD as an adjunct instructor Fall of 2020. I continued as an adjunct, teaching two or three courses each semester, until Spring of 2023. I started as a full-time term instructor in Fall of 2023 and have been here full-time since!
I completed my MSW at UMD and was thrilled to have the opportunity to work here. My time as a student in the social work program was truly rewarding, and I’m incredibly grateful to now contribute as an educator in this supportive and inspiring environment!
What do you like most about your job?
There are so many things I love about my job! The variety of roles I get to take on is one of the most exciting aspects. I deeply enjoy working with students, whether through teaching or advising, and it's incredibly rewarding to support them in their academic journeys. I also recently took on the role of MSW Director, which has given me a great opportunity to explore the administrative side of the program, something I’ve found really fulfilling. Additionally, the environment in the social work department is so supportive, and I’m lucky to work alongside such wonderful colleagues!
What is your research or teaching focus?
While I do not currently do research, I dedicate much of my time outside of UMD to clinical work as a mental health therapist. I've been with Encouragement Clinic in Superior for three years, and I'm excited to be in the process of opening my own private practice, hopefully within the next month. The clinical side of social work is something I’m truly passionate about, and I strive to bring my real-world experience into the classroom to provide students with practical, real-life examples. I particularly enjoy teaching Introduction to Social Welfare, where I can share my enthusiasm for social work, as well as the direct-practice courses, where I get to dive deeper into the hands-on aspects of the field.
Do you have any advice for students?
One of the things I love most about social work is the variety of opportunities within the field. My best advice for students is to step outside of your comfort zone and explore internships in areas you might not have initially considered. Volunteer in different settings and aim to gain as many diverse experiences as possible. The more exposure you have to different aspects of the field, the more you'll discover where your passion lies!
What do you like to do in your free time?
When I'm not at UMD or doing my therapist role, I love to spend time with my toddler. He definitely keeps me busy! I also love to garden, hike, and spend time by the lake.
