Welcome to CSD
On behalf of our faculty and staff, I welcome you to the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) at the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD).
The Undergraduate Program in CSD provides a comprehensive education across normal human communication processes as well as various communication disorders over the lifespan preparing you for an advanced degree in either speech-language pathology or audiology. Students who earn a Bachelor’s of Applied Sciences in CSD are also eligible to apply to graduate programs in related disciplines, seek a career as an SLP Assistant, or obtain a job in a variety of positions in human services.
The Graduate Program in CSD is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA) and provides specialized coursework, research experience and clinical experiences, both on and off campus. This well-rounded educational experience prepares students for a career in speech-language pathology across settings such as public schools, hospitals, clinics, rehabilitation centers and private practice.
The Robert F. Pierce Speech-Language and Hearing Clinic is housed withing the CSD Department and provides assessment and intervention services for members of the community and surrounding regions.
Serving students and the community for five decades, the CSD program has been a long-standing history and is well recognized for the close faculty-student interaction and mentoring relationships. About Us
The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders is dedicated to student learning through the application of academic and research knowledge to the realities of clinical practice.
Alongside relevant, rigorous and comprehensive coursework, undergraduate students have opportunities to conduct research and engage in clinical simulations. Graduate students, participate in clinical education experiences, learning as interns under the guidance of clinical instructors in the Robert F. Pierce Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic and affiliated internship sites. In addition, all graduate students engage directly in research. Topic areas addressed include those identified by the American Speech-Language Hearing Association: cognitive aspects of communication, communication modalities, fluency, hearing, receptive and receptive language, social aspects of communication, speech sound production and voice.
