Staff spotlight: Abbi McMillen

Meet Abbi McMillen, the Trio Upward Bound Vision Quest academic advisor for Denfeld High School.

When did you start at UMD?

I started at UMD in October 2022.

Why did you choose to work at UMD?

I chose to work at UMD because I went to college here and fell in love with it. I also am a huge advocate for Trio programs as I was also part of an Upward Bound program when I was in high school. It was perfect that I was able to do this work and return to UMD.

What do you like most about your job?

I love building relationships with my students and seeing them realize that despite their income, college is still possible for them. I also love how excited my students are when they receive scholarships or are accepted into their dream college.

Do you have any advice for students?

Make the most of your time at UMD and take advantage of all the great resources UMD has to offer. Also, take some time to look at the clubs offered at UMD and find a group of like-minded individuals to spend some time with!

What do you like to do in your free time?

I like to be by Lake Superior whenever possible. I also like to hike on the many trails around Duluth and, of course, spend time with my two dogs, Greta and Otis.
