Faculty spotlight: Julia Record

Meet Julia Record, instructor in the Department of Psychology

When did you start working at UMD?

I started working at UMD in September of 2023.

Why did you choose to work at UMD?

I chose to work at UMD because I appreciate how the Department of Psychology perceives diversity and inclusion with the utmost importance, and emphasizes the integration of teaching, research, and service. I recently graduated from the Master of Arts in Psychological Science (MAPS) program here at UMD, specifically in the Experimental Psychology Track. In this program, I got to know various faculty through my research and academic endeavors, as many of them served as positive role models for me. I thought it would be an honor to work alongside them as a faculty member.

What do you like most about your job?

I love interacting with my students, seeing them collaborate with one another, and hearing the questions they ask. I have also enjoyed my interactions with faculty members in the Department of Psychology as well, as they have done a great job of making me feel supported in my new role.

What is your research and/or teaching focus?

I primarily teach upper-division courses in the Department of Psychology, with the exception of General Psychology, this semester. My interests as of now involve investigating the stigma behind having neurodevelopmental disorders with comorbid intellectual disabilities, as well as how different areas of social functioning are impacted. In the future, I would love to expand on said area of research by investigating factors that contribute to the diagnoses and treatment of children and adolescents with neurodevelopmental disorders.

Do you have any advice for students?

Don't be afraid to answer a question incorrectly in class. It's ultimately those questions you remember the correct answers for. Also, there are no dumb questions, so be sure to ask away!

What do you like to do in your free time?

I really enjoy running on the Lakewalk, playing ultimate frisbee, doing jigsaw puzzles, playing word games, trying new restaurants/foods, and taking naps (if I am able to fall asleep).
