Viann Nguyen-Feng, assistant professor in the Department of Psychology, and three collaborators from the UMN Twin Cities College of Education and Human Development were awarded a $25K Jump Start grant for their proposal, "Ecological momentary assessment of leisure activity participation among adults with autism spectrum disorder."
Achievements
Benjamin Riden, assistant professor in the Department of Education, received the Journal of Special Education Tech in Action Article of the year. The award was given by the ISET (Innovations in Special Education Technology) Division of the Council for Exceptional Children.

Hyppa-Martin, associate professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, and Mark Mizuko, professor and head of the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, along with their colleagues, published “Comparing embedded and non-embedded visual scene displays for one adult diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder: A clinical application of single case design” in Child Language Teaching and Therapy.
Jennifer S. McCleary, assistant professor in the Department of Social Work, and her colleagues published “Exploring intergenerational communication and stress in refugee families” in Child and Family Social Work and “Mental Illness Public Stigma and Generational Differences Among Vietnamese Americans” in Community Mental Health Journal.
Mallory McCord, assistant professor in the Department of Psychology, and her coauthor published "A framework of negative responses to introversion at work" in Personality and Individual Differences. This conceptual paper proposes a framework that explains why negatives responses to introversion happen at work and the various negative outcomes associated with these responses. McCord and her colleagues also published "A meta-analysis of transactional leadership and follower performance: Double-edged effects of LMX and empowerment" in The Journal of Management, a top management journal on the Financial Times Top 50 journal list. This study suggests that transactional leadership can act as a “double-edged sword,” such as how contingent reward can foster LMX (leader-member exchange theory) but hinder empowerment, whereas management by exception can foster empowerment but hinder LMX.
Viann N. Nguyen-Feng, assistant professor in the Department of Psychology, and her colleagues published “Childhood maltreatment predicts daily stressor exposure in college students but not perceived stress or stress reactivity” in the Journal of Counseling Psychology. Nguyen-Feng and her colleagues also published “Web-Based Perceived Present Control Intervention for Voice Disorders: A Pilot Study” in the Journal of Voice.
Benjamin S. Riden, assistant professor in the Department of Education, and his colleagues published “Reliability Assessment of an Observation Tool to Measure Praise Characteristics” in the Journal of Positive Behavior Interventions. Riden and colleagues also published “Using a Daily Report Card to Reduce Off-Task Behaviors for a Student with Autism Spectrum Disorder” in the Journal of Behavioral Education.
Sharyl Samargia-Grivette, associate professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, and her colleagues published “Transcranial magnetic stimulation and functional magnet resonance imaging evaluation of adductor spasmodic dysphonia during phonation” in Brain Stimulation.
Ashley E. Thompson, assistant professor in the Department of Psychology, and her coauthor published “An Experimental Investigation of Variations in Judgments of Hypothetical Males and Females Initiating Mixed-Gender Threesomes: An Application of Sexual Script Theory” in the Archives of Sexual Behavior. Thompson and colleagues also published “The Development and Psychometric Validation of a Comprehensive Measure Assessing Fear of Incompetence among Adults Who Have a Family Member with Dementia” in the International Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease.
