Staff spotlight: Kevin Stanke

Meet Kevin Stanke, student support specialist with UMD's Department of Social Work

When did you start at UMD?

I started at UMD as a development assistant in the Labovitz School of Business and Economics in 2017, but have had multiple roles at UMD and began in the Department of Social Work in September of 2021.

Why did you choose to work at UMD?

My partner is from the Northland and she landed a position at UMD in 2014. We moved close to campus and I have a background working in student support at St. Thomas and St. Catherine's in financial aid. I wanted to be able to use my skills and knowledge at a public university in an academic setting and work with active students and hopefully direct them on a path to success. As a first-generation college student myself I often understand questions students may not know to ask.

What do you like most about your job?

The start of the academic year is always exciting. I always try my best to help so when I see someone walking around with a confused look on their face I enjoy being able to help them navigate to where they are trying to get to.

Do you have any advice for students?

Try everything once and load everything onto your plate at the beginning of the year. If you get exhausted you can always scale things back, but this is the best time in life to be active and branch out.

What do you like to do in your free time?

My favorite things to do are play basketball and ride my bicycle. I started to coach my daughters' basketball teams last year and also tried coaching soccer, even though I am still learning a lot about it myself. I love that my bicycle commute is only ten minutes (just as long as walking from the parking lot) but if I happen to have extra time at the start or the end of the day I can bike into Bagley and take the scenic route.
