Staff spotlight: Michelle Toven

Meet Michelle Toven, executive office and administrative assistant for the Department of Education and graduate program coordinator for the Master of Education program!

When did you start at UMD? Why did you choose to work at UMD?

I started at UMD in January 2023, so I'm very new! I chose to work here because I have a good friend at another campus who always talked about how the U of M system was a great place to work. When I knew I was moving to Duluth I started looking at UMD right away.

What do you like most about your job?

I really like being around students and the energy on campus. I like being in the education department especially because public education was really meaningful in my life, and contributing to the next generation of teachers feels good. So far I'm rarely ever bored and it's different every day, which I like.

Do you have any advice for students?

Take time to take care of yourselves, rest, and do things that bring you joy. College is busy and it's easy to keep going and going. Don't run yourself ragged.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I'm a huge nerd, so I love tabletop games, sci-fi and fantasy shows and books, and occasionally dressing up for a comic convention or the Renaissance festival. I also love baking, especially decorating cakes and cookies and trying new recipes.
