Student spotlight: Nicole Strumbel

Meet Nicole, a third-year student who is double majoring in psychology and cognitive science.

Why did you choose UMD?

I chose UMD for two reasons. One, I love being able to be cold for the bulk of the academic year. The second reason was that the psychology program was highly recommended to me by some older students and teachers from my high school. I also have family members that live in the area and went to school here and it just felt like a second home when I came and toured 5 years ago.

What do you like most about your programs?

The psychology program has a very hands-on approach to learning about any form of application in psychology. Statistics, research or psychological abnormalities. This program will allow you to take the materials you have learned in the classroom and will give you the opportunities to practice in class. There are also plenty of opportunities to join research teams within the department and be able to guide your own studies in the UROP program. I love that this program offers these opportunities.

What has been your most meaningful experience at UMD so far?

Working on a UROP project over the summer of 2022. Getting the opportunity to present the findings from that research to other undergraduate researchers in the Twin Cities was very fun.

What advice do you have for incoming students?

Always make time for yourself and your friends. Of course, school always comes first, but making sure to schedule time for your mental health and your friends will make the college experience a lot more enjoyable. Also, get out in the community! Find organizations that fit your interests.

What do you like to do in your free time?

In my free time, I like to spend time with my friends, paint, draw, sing and cook. I also like to go to the gym and either run or weight lift depending on the day.
